Fans waiting with bated breath for an update on Shin Godzilla 2 are in luck following the latest development, with an intriguing twist. According to a new report, a sequel to 2016’s Shin Godzilla is reportedly in development. The report arrives weeks before Godzilla Minus Zero, Toho’s latest Japanese-produced Godzilla movie.
A report from Smart Flash claims that Shin Godzilla 2 has been in development for quite some time. It is reportedly scheduled to begin filming in November this year. However, some of the casting information makes the sequel one of the more intriguing entries in the franchise. The source didn’t reveal whether any of the original film’s directors, Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi, will return to helm the sequel.
The Shin Godzilla 2 report raises questions about what comes next for the franchise
The report claims that Shin Godzilla’s Hiroki Hasegawa, Satomi Ishihara, and Yutaka Takenouchi will be joined by new actors in the sequel. These include Minami Hamabe and Tasuku Emoto, raising some interesting questions about the franchise. Those who watched Godzilla Minus One will remember Hamabe as Noriko Oishi, a role she reprises in Godzilla Minus Zero.
The report notes that repeating an actor from an offshoot of the franchise is unusual. However, the report suggests that Hamabe’s representation by Toho Entertainment made the casting arrangement possible. Unlike her reported involvement in Shin Godzilla 2, Hamabe will reprise her role as Noriko Oishi in the upcoming Godzilla Minus Zero. The report itself describes Shin Godzilla and Godzilla Minus One as belonging to “different timeline[s].”
Another interesting bit of information is that Hamabe and Emoto also starred in Shin Kamen Rider, which was also directed by Anno. The report suggests that the filmmaker’s fruitful collaboration with the actors on Shin Kamen Rider resulted in them being cast in Shin Godzilla 2.
It remains to be seen whether or when Toho will officially announce a Shin Godzilla sequel. The first film scored 87% on Rotten Tomatoes and grossed over $82 million worldwide. Godzilla Minus Zero is scheduled to release in theaters on November 6, 2026.
