Mike Flanagan Reveals the Personal Reason He Had To Revisit Stephen King’s Carrie

A new Carrie became more than another trip through Stephen King’s horror classic for Mike Flanagan. The filmmaker talked about a personal reason that unexpectedly became the spark that made him rethink the story and the teenagers at its center.

Mike Flanagan said during a recent interview that the idea arrived as what he called a “monolithic question,” one he could not shake. The thought stayed with him for roughly a week, and instead of dismissing the project, he began thinking, “I think there’s something here.” His son’s upcoming move into high school helped him understand why. It made him think about “the world he was stepping into” and how dramatically it differed from the one Stephen King described decades earlier.

Three generations shaped that realization. King wrote Carrie around the high school world of the 1970s. Flanagan experienced his own teenage years in the 1990s, which he already viewed as very different from King’s era. Watching his son approach high school today gave Flanagan a new perspective and helped a “new version of the central characters” take shape.

That thinking now sits behind Prime Video’s eight-episode adaptation. Summer H. Howell plays Carrie White, with Samantha Sloyan as Margaret White and Siena Agudong as Sue Snell. Alison Thornton portrays Chris Hargensen, Amber Midthunder plays Rita Desjardin, Joel Oulette is Tommy Ross, and Josie Totah takes on Tina Blake.

The latest cast follows a long line of performers who have inhabited these roles. Sissy Spacek first played Carrie in Brian De Palma’s 1976 movie, while Angela Bettis and Chloë Grace Moretz later took the character to television and theaters. Piper Laurie, Amy Irving, and Nancy Allen also left their marks on earlier versions.

Flanagan isn’t simply dusting off the movie characters. The series gives Chris more room to breathe by exploring her life outside the central story, while Rita gets her own arc that extends beyond the school setting.

The complete series premieres on October 7 on Prime Video.
