Alan Cumming Reveals an Awkward Truth About ‘Avengers: Doomsday’

Alan Cumming admitted he remains unsure about the story behind Avengers: Doomsday. The actor is returning as Nightcrawler from the X-Men franchise. He also revealed how Marvel’s secrecy affected his experience filming the movie.

Cumming discussed Avengers: Doomsday during a SiriusXM interview. He admitted he was extremely cautious about discussing the Marvel movie.

“I’m just absolutely terrified to say anything,” Cumming said. He then revealed the surprising reason behind his caution. “I don’t fully understand the plot,” he admitted.

Cumming explained that actors receive limited information during production. He recalled filming a scene when someone began explaining the action around him. “These giant robots are blah blah,” Cumming recalled the person saying. He ultimately decided he did not need every detail about the sequence.

“I was like, you know what. Thank you so much,” Cumming said. He explained that he mainly needed instructions about his character’s actions. “Tell me where I point my whatever I point,” he continued. “I’ll go do that.” Cumming joked that he mainly knew he was there to run around.

The Avengers Doomsday experience also involved unusual interactions with fellow cast members. He said he did not even meet some actors during filming. Cumming recently saw Florence Pugh at the Emmys and discussed their shared scene. “I’ve never met you, but you lay on top of me,” he recalled telling her.

Pugh apparently explained that her body double had performed the scene instead. Cumming said her response was equally. “Yeah, I laid on top of you as well, but it was your body double,” she reportedly replied.

Cumming also discussed Marvel’s strict spoiler rules. “You don’t really know what you’re allowed to say,” he explained. He said there was no one consistently coaching him about what could be revealed.

The actor previously faced backlash after teasing a flight involving Pedro Pascal‘s character. He later acknowledged the consequences of discussing details publicly.

Cumming will reprise Nightcrawler alongside other returning X-Men actors. The cast also includes the Fantastic Four and Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom.

Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to arrive in theaters on December 18.
