Zoe Saldaña’s latest Lioness Season 4 update isn’t what fans were hoping to hear. The star and executive producer opened up about the Paramount+ spy thriller’s uncertain future and Joe McNamara’s next chapter after its dramatic Season 3 finale.
Zoe Saldaña admits she doesn’t know if Lioness will get Season 4
Zoe Saldaña doesn’t know whether Lioness will return for Season 4. The actress, 48, shared her uncertainty about the Paramount+ spy thriller’s future with PEOPLE. “I don’t know if we’re able to go to a season 4,” she said. “I don’t know where he would take it.”
Saldaña stars as CIA operative Joe McNamara and serves as an executive producer. Taylor Sheridan created the series, which has now aired three seasons. She admitted she doesn’t know what another chapter for Joe might look like.
Meanwhile, Season 3 put Joe in a dramatically different position after she became the target herself. Saldaña believes the kidnapping storyline explains why so much of the story unfolded closer to home. “Joe was the victim,” she explained. “She was the one that was extracted, and she was the one that had to get herself out.” “In a way, I almost feel like Joe was the Lioness in season 3,” she continued. She added, “She was the target, and she was also the Lioness.”
Additionally, Saldaña addressed costar Michael Kelly, who plays CIA Deputy Director Byron Westfield. Kelly recently joined the cast of Taylor Sheridan’s Landman season 3. “Michael can’t be going there and doing more work,” she joked. “If we do come back for season 4, we have him first.” “I don’t see anybody else playing Byron,” she added.
Ahead of Season 3, Saldaña said she discussed Joe’s storyline with Sheridan before production began. “It was very demanding, I’m not gonna lie,” she said at the time. “I didn’t even know if I was gonna be able to pull it off.” Still, she praised the creator’s approach to writing women. “I have a great deal of respect for men that really know how to write women,” Saldaña said. Lioness is currently streaming on Paramount+.
