Police have detained Hannah Einbinder for attending a major protest in New York City. A video of the actors at the protest site has gone viral on social media.
Einbinder and Susan Sarandon are among those detained on September 24 for protesting against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s speech at the United Nations General Assembly on Thursday. It remains uncertain whether the two actors have been arrested or merely detained.
PIX11 reports that more than 100 people were taken into custody during the protest. Notable figures detained or arrested also include comedian Caleb Hearon and New York City Council Member Jen Gutiérrez.
According to The New York Times, Netanyahu delivered a fiery speech at the U.N. General Assembly, targeting NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani and internet streamer Hasan Piker.
Further details about the detainments are awaited.
Why was Hannah Einbinder protesting in New York?
Einbinder has long been vocal about her support of Palestine, along with Sarandon and other celebrities detained at the protest. A video of the Hacks star in handcuffs has surfaced, where she can be heard saying “Free Palestine” and “Netanyahu out of New York.”
In 2025, Einbinder made pro-Palestine remarks after winning an Emmy Award for Supporting Actress for her performance in Hacks. In her acceptance speech, the 31-year-old declared, “f–k ICE” and “free Palestine.”
“I feel like it is my obligation as a Jewish person to distinguish Jews from the State of Israel, because our religion and our culture is such an important and long-standing… institution that is really separate to this sort of ethno-nationalist state,” she told the press at the time.
Einbinder is best known for playing struggling comedy writer Ava Daniels in the acclaimed HBO Max dark comedy series Hacks. In 2026, she starred in the surrealist psychological romance Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma and the comedy film Seekers of Infinite Love.
