2015 comedy Aloha with a star-studded line-up to stream on Hulu next
Cameron Crowe’s 2015 romantic comedy Aloha will start streaming on Hulu on October 1, according to the streamer’s official schedule. The film stars Bradley Cooper, Emma Stone, Rachel McAdams, Bill Murray, John Krasinski, Danny McBride, and Alec Baldwin. Additionally, Crowe wrote, co-produced, and directed the movie.
The story follows former U.S. Air Force officer Brian Gilcrest, played by Cooper, who returns to Hawaii. There, a former boss rehires him to oversee the launch of a privatized weapons satellite. Meanwhile, Stone plays his Air Force liaison, Captain Allison Ng, whose idealism reignites his passion for space.
Sony Pictures Releasing distributed the film in the United States and Canada on May 29, 2015. However, it earned only $26.3 million worldwide against a reported budget of $37 to $52 million. As a result, the film opened at sixth place at the domestic box office with $9.7 million.
Critics largely panned the film upon release. Specifically, it holds a 20% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes from 165 reviews. Audiences surveyed by CinemaScore gave it a B- grade during opening weekend.
Furthermore, the film drew controversy over the casting of Stone as a character of part-Hawaiian and part-Chinese descent. The Media Action Network for Asian Americans accused the production of whitewashing. Crowe later apologized, and Stone also acknowledged the issue as a broader Hollywood problem.
Aloha joins a large slate of titles arriving on Hulu on October 1. Other notable additions include Die Hard, Ghostbusters, Hereditary, Midsommar, The Substance, Soul, and Edward Scissorhands. The Hunger Games franchise will also arrive on the platform later in October. Meanwhile, Hulu Original series Reasonable Doubt Season 4 and Clown Panic debut during the month as well.
