Rodrigo Teixeira believes international films could eventually challenge Hollywood’s long-standing dominance at the Academy Awards. The Brazilian film producer predicted that U.S. movies could lose their hold on the Oscars as international cinema gains greater recognition.

On Tuesday, Teixeira appeared at the San Sebastian Film Festival’s Creative Investors’ Conference, co-organized by CAA Media Finance. During the event, he predicted that international films could make up 60% of Best Picture nominees within five years.

According to Variety, Teixeira said, “We are seeing at least three-four international films in the best film category. And in five years from now, I believe international films will make up 60% of the category for best film. I truly believe that.”

“Because we can talk more. We have freedom of speech, and in the U.S., without freedom of speech, it’s difficult to get financed. But outside the U.S. we have it, and I believe in five years the international films are going to be bigger than American films,” he added.

Teixeira has yet to win an Oscar, but he earned an Academy Award nomination as a producer of I’m Still Here.

Although the producer has had one film nominated for an Oscar, several of his other projects have generated awards-season buzz. These include Call Me by Your Name, Ad Astra, and the 2026 film Paper Tiger.

Historically, U.S. films have dominated the Academy Awards. However, Teixeira believes the growing presence of international films in major categories could significantly change the Oscars landscape in the coming years.
