‘Harry & Meghan’ Director’s Telling Comment on Sussexes’ UK Move Raises Eyebrows — Report

Liz Garbus, the Oscar-nominated director behind Netflix’s 2022 docuseries “Harry & Meghan,” is weighing in on Prince Harry and Meghan Markle‘s decision to leave America behind after six years. Speaking at the Toronto International Film Festival, Garbus addressed the couple’s surprise return to the UK publicly for the first time.

‘Harry & Meghan’ docuseries director comments on Sussexes move to UK: ‘It’s a hard road’

Liz Garbus reflected on Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s earlier stay in Canada while speaking at TIFF 2026. The director created the popular six-episode series chronicling the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. The documentary showcased the couple building a new life in America after exiting royal duties. She said she wasn’t privy to any inside information about the move. “I wish them well, and it’s a hard road,” she told Variety, declining to speculate further on what prompted the shift.

Garbus clearly recognized the interesting timing of her own public comments about the former royals. She noted that TIFF itself takes place in a Commonwealth country and pointed to the couple’s earlier stint on Vancouver Island in Canada, where they briefly relocated in early 2020 before settling in Montecito, California, as a genuinely positive chapter for them.

Garbus’ docuseries became one of Netflix’s biggest documentary launches when it premiered in December 2022, walking viewers through the pair’s courtship and the pressures that led them to step back from their full-time royal roles. Her comments came as Harry and Meghan navigate a return that’s proven far more complicated than their original departure, including a tense exchange with Buckingham Palace over a letter reasserting their status as private citizens.

The move also arrived amid an increasingly strained dynamic between Harry and his brother, Prince William, with recent reports describing their relationship as having devolved into what insiders call a very cold war rather than any path toward reconciliation. The couple’s departure from California has drawn its own reaction too, with former neighbors in Montecito sharing mixed feelings about seeing them go.
