A businessman with close Kremlin ties quietly bankrolled a major chunk of Donald Trump Jr.’s Bahamas wedding festivities this year. This disclosure has reignited questions about foreign money flowing toward a sitting president’s family.
Umar Kremlev paid hundreds of thousands toward Trump Jr.’s Bahamas wedding celebrations
The financier behind the spending was Umar Kremlev, head of the International Boxing Association. He picked up the tab for a private island rental and a fireworks show tied to the post-wedding festivities, The New York Times sources claim. ProPublica broke the story first. At the party itself, Kremlev’s presence puzzled several attendees, one source alleged, with guests privately wondering who he was and why he’d been included.
Watchdogs who study government ethics point out that relatives of a sitting president are usually advised to steer clear of expensive personal gifts tied to foreign nationals, particularly those connected to a rival power like Russia, precisely because such gestures can create the appearance of a future favor owed.
Moreover, once the story broke, Trump Jr. and his wife, Bettina, responded publicly on Instagram. Their explanation framed the island getaway as a separate, pre-planned trip among friends, distinct from the wedding ceremony itself. Ethics specialists were unmoved by that framing, arguing the distinction changes little. Notably, Kremlev skipped the actual ceremony.
“Our dear friend Umar very generously hosted two incredible nights of celebrations for us AFTER our wedding,” the couple wrote. They called it “an extraordinarily generous wedding gift from a friend, and something for which we were and remain incredibly grateful.”
The couple added more, insisting, “sometimes a wedding gift is simply a wedding gift.” They seemed to rejected any political reading of the friendship.
Donald Trump skipped his son’s wedding entirely. Additionally, through the White House, he claimed no familiarity with Kremlev whatsoever and dismissed it as “Not a big deal!”
