Andy Burnham Steps Back From PM Duties After Family Loss

Andy Burnham stepped away from official duties after his father, Roy Burnham, died following a long battle with Alzheimer’s. The Prime Minister canceled engagements scheduled for Monday and Tuesday as his family mourned the loss.

Burnham had spoken openly about his father’s condition before Roy’s death. His experience caring for his father also shaped his push to overhaul England’s adult social care system.

The Prime Minister has cancelled engagements following the death of his father Roy

The BBC reported that Burnham canceled several engagements following his father’s death. He had been scheduled to host business leaders at Downing Street on Monday afternoon. Burnham previously revealed that Alzheimer’s had left Roy unaware of his son’s political achievement. Roy did not know Burnham had become prime minister in July.

In an interview with The Times before taking office, Burnham described that realization as painful. “That’s a sadness because he would be (proud),” Burnham said. He added, “The way I look at it, it’s his achievement as well.”

“A whole family achievement although he doesn’t know it,” Burnham continued. The admission offered a deeply personal glimpse into his family’s experience during his political rise.

Reportedly, Roy’s illness became a major motivation behind Burnham’s social care ambitions. During a speech later that month, Burnham promised to help “my dad and the millions like him.” Communities Secretary Angela Rayner also shared her condolences. “My thoughts are with Andy and his family at this terribly difficult – and sad time,” she said.

Roy had been in his mid-80s and worked as a telephone engineer. He first worked for the Post Office before joining BT. He and Burnham’s mother, Eileen, raised their three sons in Culcheth, Cheshire. Burnham later described that childhood as “close-knit” in his 2024 book Look North. He credited his parents with quietly encouraging their sons toward university.

“Neither my dad, Roy, nor my mum, Eileen, went to university,” Burnham wrote. He explained that both parents might have attended under different circumstances. Their home, he recalled, remained filled with “music, life, laughter, love and support.” Roy’s death therefore marked a deeply personal loss for the prime minister.

For now, Burnham’s canceled schedule allowed him time with his family following a difficult chapter.
