Dark Matter reveals how the box chooses a world in the Multiverse
Dark Matter Season 2 Episode 3, now streaming on Apple TV+, reveals a key detail about how the Box selects destinations. Emotions and thoughts have always influenced the Box’s world selection. However, the episode confirms that thinking about a specific person’s variant directs travelers to that person’s world.
Ryan1 and Amanda2 test this theory during their journey through the multiverse. Amanda2 realizes that Ryan1 thinks similarly to Jason2 and takes a calculated risk. She opens the Box door while both of them focus their thoughts on Jason2.
The gamble delivers them directly to Jason1’s world, which is also Ryan1’s home. The broken concrete casing around the Box confirms their successful arrival. Ryan1 still refuses to believe he is home until he personally verifies his own house.
After confirming their location, Ryan1 and Amanda2 develop a working theory about the Box’s mechanics. They conclude that the Box transports travelers to the world where the person they think about actually resides. Jason2’s presence in Ryan1’s world made their focused thoughts an effective navigation tool.
This revelation also explains the episode’s ending, where a new Box reforms in the ’70s world. Jason1 initially believes the Box always reconnects to worlds where an outlet was destroyed. However, Ryan1 and Amanda2’s theory suggests a different explanation entirely.
A disconnected Box only reappears when someone enters the multiverse intending to find a resident of that world. Charlie points out that a version of Leighton likely triggered the Box’s return. This means the Dessens’ hiding place is no longer secure from multiverse travelers seeking them out.
