Tyler Perry’s New Comedy Sequel Is Already a Smashing Hit on Streaming

Tyler Perry keeps expanding his 2026 slate across theaters and streaming, but his latest Netflix release is a testament to the fact that reviving an old franchise can possibly outperform the brand-new.

Why Did I Get Married Again? is topping Netflix’s streaming charts

Why Did I Get Married Again? landed on Netflix on September 9 and immediately climbed to number one on the platform’s US movie rankings, according to FlixPatrol. The film’s day-one performance has it among the streamer’s current top-viewed titles, alongside Those Who Wish Me Dead, The Whisper Man, and Turning Point: Generation 9/11.

The original Why Did I Get Married? opened at number one at the box office in 2007, and its 2010 follow-up, Why Did I Get Married Too?, performed even better theatrically. Both films came from a stage play Tyler Perry wrote, directed, and starred in, alongside a cast that included Janet Jackson, Jill Scott, Malik Yoba, Sharon Leal, Tasha Smith, Michael Jai White, Richard T. Jones, Denise Boutte, and Keesha Sharp. The franchise’s success eventually led to a television spinoff in 2011.

Then, for over a decade, nothing. Sharon Leal, who returns in the new film as Dianne, told USA Today that fans regularly approached her asking her to relay a message to Perry about making another entry. Perry’s own explanation for the gap was loose by design.

That aging process shapes the new film’s premise. Why Did I Get Married Again? relocates the old friend group to Italy for the wedding of Angela and Marcus’s daughter, with tension arising as the younger generation repeats the same relationship mistakes their parents made years earlier.

Taraji P. Henson joins the cast as Roselyn, introduced as a longtime member of the group despite never appearing in earlier films, a retcon many viewers seem willing to overlook given the casting. The most notable absence is Janet Jackson, whose character, Patricia, served as something of an emotional anchor in the original two films.
