The musical comedy that Trey Parker and Matt Stone have been working on with Not Like Us singer Kendrick Lamar has faced delays. The South Park creators are nowhere close to a release date, with the film being placed on the back burner according to reports.
Stone and Parker have released a statement to that end. As reported by The Ankler, they stated, “We take full responsibility for the schedule delay of this movie. We apologize to our partners at pgLang and Paramount, and we appreciate their patience. South Park and life’s circumstances have gotten in the way, but we still believe in the project.”
This wouldn’t have been that big a deal if the film was simply in development hell, but it seems that Paramount has already committed something to the tune of $100 million to the project. The film is internally known at the studio as Whitney Springs, but currently does not have an official title.
What is Trey Parker, Matt Stone, and Kendrick Lamar’s musical movie about?
The Ankler reported that the film is a musical about slavery. It stars Parker as a Midwest town’s racist mayor. The protagonist of the movie is a Black reenactor who works at a historical slave plantation museum. The story’s central conflict ignites when he discovers that his white girlfriend’s ancestors once owned his own ancestors. It reportedly stars Parker as the Midwest town’s racist mayor, whom the protagonist regularly clashes with.
The film is also said to include multiple, unreleased, original songs from Lamar.
Previously, the film was scheduled for a March 20, 2026 release, but was pulled from Paramount’s release schedule. The release date before this was July 4, 2025. However, Kendrick Lamar’s upcoming tour and production responsibilities on South Park pushed the date to March of 2026.
Vernon Chatman, the producer on South Park, wrote the script. In November, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter, he provided an update on the film, stating that the team was “working hard” on the movie. Brian Robbins, who served as the head of films at Paramount when the film was announced, praised the script for its originality, calling it one of the most hilarious scripts that had come across his desk.
