What happens in Netflix’s Below trailer?

“Right before the accident, you saw something in the water,” a voiceover plays at the beginning of the Below trailer. It suggests the mysterious presence of a deadly creature in the sea.

In this story, Josh Hartnett plays a fisherman, Calvin Penney, in a small town in Newfoundland. He can be seen haunted by his father’s mysterious death from years ago.

While trying to have a normal life with his family, Calvin soon realizes that there’s a monster lurking in the depths of the water. “I spent my whole life on the water. I thought I understood it.”

To save his son and family members, Calvin joins forces with a marine researcher, played by Mackenzie Davis, in order to discover the creature and many other hidden island secrets.

Below’s ensemble cast also includes Willow Kean (The King Tide, Away from Everywhere), Ruby Stokes (Lockwood & Co, Sunny Dancer), Rohan Campbell (Halloween Ends, The Monkey), and Kaleb Horn (Revival, Chucky).

The six-part Netflix limited series is created by Jesse McKeown and written by Karen Walton, Perry Chafe, and Natty Zavitz. Jamie Childs, Helen Shaver, and Stephen Dunn have directed the episodes.

Jessica Rhoades, Chris Hatcher, Hartnett, McKeown, Childs, Louise Sutton, and Sharon Hall serve as the executive producers. Below premieres on Netflix on October 8, 2026.
