A brutal frontier drama is once again pulling viewers toward one of its darkest performances. Years after its awards-season run, the film remains a strong showcase for Tom Hardy’s villainous turn, while its survival story continues to attract audiences on streaming.
The Revenant finds new streaming audience on HBO Max
As per the Flix Patrol, The Revenant has climbed from No. 5 to No. 4 on the Netflix Top 10 list, moving past Normal, Taken 2, and The Craft. The jump gives the 2015 epic another burst of attention, with fans revisiting Alejandro González Iñárritu’s harsh tale of survival and revenge.
Leonardo DiCaprio stars as Hugh Glass, a frontiersman who suffers a devastating bear attack during a 1820s fur-trapping expedition. After his group abandons him, Glass fights through the wilderness while pursuing John Fitzgerald, played by Tom Hardy, after Fitzgerald kills Glass’ son and leaves him behind. Domhnall Gleeson and Will Poulter also feature.
What began as a costly bet turned into a major box-office win. Iñárritu co-wrote the screenplay with Mark L. Smith, drawing in part from Michael Punke’s novel, and directed the film himself. It debuted in limited release on December 25, 2015, before reaching theaters nationwide on January 8, 2016. With a reported $135 million budget, the film ultimately brought in roughly $533 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo.
Its numbers only tell part of the story. The film also built a strong reputation among fans and critics, helping it remain relevant years later. Rotten Tomatoes lists a 78% Tomatometer rating and an 84% audience score based on more than 100,000 ratings. IMDb users give it an 8.0/10 from around 960,000 ratings. Iñárritu’s direction, cinematography, and physically demanding performances from Hardy and DiCaprio earned particular praise, although the brutal violence and relentless pace can make the experience anything but easy.
DiCaprio also won the Academy Award for Best Actor, and the film collected three Oscars overall. With The Revenant now streaming on HBO Max and continuing to draw fans, its icy wilderness clearly still has some bite.
