Channing Tatum and James Marsden may not be done with the MCU just yet. A new rumor offers a surprising update on the potential futures of Gambit and Cyclops. Both characters could have a bigger role to play beyond Avengers: Doomsday.
Trusted Marvel scooper James Mack has revealed that both characters are likely going to return for Avengers: Secret Wars. The upcoming MCU film is set to serve as the finale of the MCU’s Multiverse Saga and potentially reset the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Marvel has also cast Kit Connor as Cyclops for its upcoming X-Men reboot film. So, Marsden’s involvement in Secret Wars could hint at some big changes or even major deaths before the MCU’s new status quo has settled.
What the latest Avengers: Secret Wars rumors say
Kevin Feige has revealed that Jonathan Hickman and Esad Ribić’s 2015 Secret Wars comic run will inspire Avengers: Doomsday, Avengers: Secret Wars, and what comes after. The 2015 Secret Wars storyline ended with the Marvel Universe being rebuilt, paving the way for the All-New, All-Different Marvel era, which is apparently the goal.
Regarding this, Feige said, “It starts with a collision of worlds, and it ends in a Marvel Multiverse rebuilt and retooled for the modern age. They invented something new, seamlessly picking up where the old universe left off, but branching out in all-new, all-different directions. We do the same thing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.”
Rumors have also circulated that Secret Wars could feature other Marvel Legacy characters that will not show up in Doomsday. These could include characters from Tim Story’s Fantastic Four films, Fant4stic, The Amazing Spider-Man films, Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man universe, and potentially Ang Lee’s Hulk. One rumored possibility would be Miles Teller’s Reed Richards appearing as the Maker, a darker version of the character.
A separate rumor states that the Avengers will be a once-a-decade double event similar to Infinity War-Endgame and Doomsday-Secret Wars. Marvel is likely looking at the X-Men, The Fantastic Four, and Spider-Man as its flagship franchises, much like Captain America, Thor, and Iron Man were during the Infinity Saga.
Avengers: Doomsday releases on December 18, 2026, while Secret Wars will hit theaters a year later on December 17, 2027.
