Comedy Central’s Funniest TV Show Finally Returns After 7 Years, But There’s a Catch

A classic Comedy Central mainstay is finally making a comeback, but not in the way that fans might have expected. Fans will see fresh content from the IP for the first time in years.

Comedy Central’s educational comedy series, Drunk History, will be returning this fall with three brand-new, short-form skits. Starting September 15, the shorts are going to be available on Comedy Central’s YouTube channel.

What is Drunk History about? Comedy Central’s hit history comedy TV show

Comedy Central’s Drunk History is a show created by Derek Waters and Jeremy Konner. The gags in the show follow a simple format. They usually follow drunken retellings of well-known historical events, along with lip-synced re-enactments from some of the best comedians that the industry has to offer.

Speaking about the show returning, Ari Pearce, who is the Head of Comedy Central Original Content, said, “We are thrilled that Drunk History is back. These new episodes reflect our heritage as both the home of iconic comedy franchises and a premier launchpad for comedic talent.”

Waters also spoke out about the comeback, stating, “History used to be a thing of our past but it’s slowly becoming our future. We need to learn from our history but we also need to be laughing right now.”

This format famously originated when an inebriated Jake Johnson told Waters about the 1967 death of Otis Redding in a plane crash. Waters, partnering with Konner, would transplant this format to the fatal duel between United States political rivals Aaron Burr and Alexander Hamilton, which resulted in the death of the latter. The video that came out of this exercise went viral, and before long, the duo had seventy episodes produced between 2013 and 2019 for Comedy Central, across six seasons.

The show would receive a slew of Emmy nominations, winning its first accolade in 2015 for its costumes. It would also go on to spawn international versions of itself, chiefly in Australia, Mexico, and the United Kingdom.
