According to Variety, Clooney became emotional talking about his sister, who died of cancer at 65. The “Ocean’s Eleven” star recalled being by his sister’s side when she died. He claimed that the incident shook him profoundly and changed his perspective on life.

“She died very quickly, and I was with her when she died,” Clooney said. “There was this feeling, being with her, holding her hand when she died, understanding how brief all of this is.”

The actor also reflected on how he could feel his childhood memories with his sister had occurred in the recent past. “It was minutes ago that she and I were little kids together; minutes ago we were holding hands as little kids,” he said.

The whole experience left the “Michael Clayton” star with a simple but powerful directive: “Time goes fast. All of this. And so we have to find nothing but joy.”

Clooney also spoke about his decades-long career and the risks he took while making “Good Night, and Goodluck” in 2005. The actor revealed that he had mortgaged his house to pay for the film. Eventually, the film became one of the most career-defining projects of his life.

Clooney also praised his wife, renowned human rights lawyer Amal Clooney, for her work through the Clooney Foundation for Justice. He also remembered his father for the lessons he had imparted about challenging the powers that be and supporting those who were more vulnerable. He said the particular principles have guided him throughout his life.

Clooney called his wife “badass”. Though he brought attention to humanitarian causes like Darfur, Amal had practically brought the perpetrators to justice.

The masterclass at the Venice Film Festival offered a rare glimpse into his personal life. The actor dealt with subjects like loss, gratitude, family, and his career.
