Quinta Brunson admitted that Abbott Elementary Season 5 sometimes felt like a “filler season.” She also said the creative team approached Abbott Elementary Season 6 with a much clearer plan.
The creator and star said that she wanted the upcoming season to move its characters toward specific goals instead of letting stories unfold without enough direction.
Quinta Brunson promises major changes to ‘Abbott Elementary’ after fans called the season filler
Brunson told Entertainment Weekly that Season 5 still produced strong work, but she felt the overall story lacked focus.
“Season 5 felt like the first time where we were, in a lot of ways, doing a filler season,” she said.
For Season 6, Brunson entered the writers’ room with a stronger idea of where she wanted the characters to end up.
“In 6, I really wanted to come in with a more direct energy,” she explained. “Like, ‘I know I want these characters to be here by the end of season 6. I want these major things to happen.’”
That approach affected several central characters.
Season 5 pushed Gregory Eddie and Jacob Hill into new professional territory. Gregory also made progress in his relationship with Janine Teagues and revealed plans to propose to her.
Brunson teased more developments for Gregory and Jacob in Abbott Elementary Season 6.
“So, yes, the boys are going to be locked in and doing all types of fun things together, both separately and together,” she said.
The ABC sitcom also planned to return to Janine’s bond with Barbara Howard.
“I’m so excited for how much we’re delving back into Janine and Barbara,” Brunson said. “What I think I can say is that that love affair will resurface very clearly this season.”
Brunson also wanted to expand the world around Abbott without abandoning stories the series had already established.
The new season planned to revisit the golf course storyline from Season 4. Brunson also teased the arrival of a new character.
She said fan feedback influenced how she thought about the show, but she did not let audience reactions control every creative decision.
“I take feedback with a grain of salt,” Brunson said.
She pointed to Ava Coleman as an example. Some viewers initially disliked the character, but she later became a fan favorite.
For Brunson, that response reinforced the importance of maintaining a clear creative vision.
Abbott Elementary Season 6 was scheduled to premiere October 7 on ABC.
