Julia Garner still appears willing to transform into Madonna, but her latest update offers more intrigue than certainty. After years of starts, stops and reinventions, the actress has addressed the Madonna biopic again without confirming whether cameras will ever roll.
Julia Garner gives an update on the long-awaited Madonna biopic
Garner revisited the project in a new ELLE interview while discussing her career and growing friendship with Madonna. “I think the movie has to get made,” Garner said with a smile. However, she immediately added, “But we’ll see….”
That carefully worded response keeps the Julia Garner Madonna project alive, but it stops well short of announcing a production restart. Last year, Garner also insisted the film was “supposed to still happen”.
Since then, the story has become even more complicated.
Madonna revealed in June that her original Universal Pictures film collapsed over budget disagreements. In fact, she said she spent two years writing the script and another two years on budgeting and casting.
“We had a falling out, me and Universal, regarding budget,” Madonna explained. She argued that her “huge life” required a suitably large production. Meanwhile, Netflix approached her about turning the story into a series. However, Madonna said rights issues involving her Universal script created another obstacle.
Despite those setbacks, Garner and Madonna have remained close. Earlier this year, the pair filmed The Studio Season 2 together in Venice. They also recreated “Like a Virgin” during a gondola ride and shared the video online.
More recently, Garner told ELLE that working with Madonna was “incredible” and called her “one of the funniest people” she knows. That friendship makes Garner’s latest answer especially interesting. After all, she clearly has not distanced herself from the long-delayed Madonna biopic.
Still, her “we’ll see” caveat leaves the project where fans have often found it: alive enough to discuss, but without a confirmed production date.
For now, Julia Garner remains attached to the idea of playing Madonna. Whether the movie finally reaches a set remains the unanswered question.
