Only Murders in the Building is shifting its writers’ room to New York for a probable Season 7, according to Deadline. The Hulu mystery comedy has not received an official renewal for another installment yet. Still, showrunner John Hoffman plans to lead an in-person writing team in the city.
The series continues to perform strongly for the streaming platform. It recently picked up five additional Emmy nominations. These achievements reinforce its position as one of Hulu’s flagship shows. Hoffman and his team still need to assemble the writing staff for the potential seventh season. Several writers from past seasons will likely continue and relocate to New York.
Streaming platforms often greenlight writers’ rooms before formally announcing renewals for new seasons. This strategy reduces the wait time between installments for viewers. The show has largely maintained a yearly release schedule since launching. Season 6 arrives on Dec. 8 after a 15-month break from Season 5. That gap marks the longest hiatus in the show’s run so far.
The London-set Season 6 wrapped production just last week. The logistical challenges of that overseas shoot made the old workflow unsustainable for Season 7. Previously, the team completed scripts in Los Angeles before Hoffman headed to New York for production. The next season will likely bring the story back to New York.
The production timeline now requires writing and filming to happen simultaneously for a 2027 or early 2028 release. This overlap prompted the relocation of the writers’ room. Hoffman can now manage both creative and production responsibilities from one city. Steve Martin co-created the series alongside Hoffman. Martin, Martin Short, Selena Gomez, Dan Fogelman, Jess Rosenthal, Ben Smith, Jennifer Crittenden, and Gabrielle Allan serve as executive producers on Season 6.
