The planned reunion between two Wicked favorites just lost another major piece. Jonathan Bailey has exited Sunday in the Park with George, following Ariana Grande’s departure from the 2027 West End revival.
Bailey confirmed his decision after Grande stepped away from the production earlier this month. His exit now leaves the musical searching for new actors to take over both central roles.

Bailey explained that Grande remained one of his closest friends while announcing his decision. “Ari is one of my dearest friends, and my support for her is unwavering,” Bailey wrote in a statement shared on his Instagram Stories. He also praised director Marianne Elliott, calling her “extraordinary” and “one of my longest collaborators and friends.” Bailey said he had reached his decision only after “much consideration.”
The actor also made clear that the musical still meant a great deal to him. “This brilliant, introspective musical has been a real passion project for me,” he wrote. He added that he felt “incredibly lucky” to have shared its journey with the production team.
Bailey specifically highlighted the story’s relationship between George and Dot. He described them as “a beautiful, devoted pairing” and said he looked forward to seeing what the replacement actors would create.
The musical had originally been shaping up as a major reunion for Bailey and Grande. Deadline first reported last December that the pair were considering reuniting for Stephen Sondheim’s musical. Empire Street Productions and London’s Barbican Centre confirmed the project in January. The production planned a summer 2027 opening, with Bailey and Grande leading the cast.
Grande later withdrew as she prepared to step back from public-facing work after her Eternal Sunshine tour. Her final London show was scheduled for September 1 at the O2 Arena. The production had also delayed ticket sales until after her tour wrapped.
Now, Bailey’s departure has changed the equation completely. Both actors originally attached to the revival have walked away before rehearsals began. Bailey ended his statement by wishing the company well. “I wish the very best to the entire company with what will no doubt be an incredible production,” he wrote.
For now, the revival is still moving ahead, with producers searching for new leads. Bailey’s exit means two major roles now need new faces. That makes the next casting announcement one to watch.
