Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy’s blockbuster western drama film is returning to HBO Max. Directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu, The Revenant was theatrically released in 2025 and is based on Michael Punke’s 2002 novel of the same name.
In the film, DiCaprio plays the role of Hugh Glass, a frontiersman from 1823. Now, after 11 long years, The Revenant is returning on HBO Max starting September 1, 2026.
The film was both a critical and commercial hit. As of writing, it has a 78% Tomatometer score and an 84% rating on the Popcornmeter on Rotten Tomatoes. Made on an estimated budget of $135 million, the film grossed a worldwide total of $533.5 million, per The Numbers.
What is Leonardo DiCaprio’s The Revenant about?
The film’s synopsis on IMDb reads, “A frontiersman on a fur trading expedition in the 1820s fights for survival after being mauled by a bear and left for dead by members of his own hunting team.”
Set in 1823, the film follows DiCaprio’s legendary explorer, Hugh Glass. Glass is a frontiersman who guides a team of fur trappers through the freezing American wilderness. Tragedy strikes when he is savagely mauled by a grizzly bear. He gets gravely injured, slowing down the whole team’s expedition.
The fur trappers leave him behind, along with his half-Pawnee son Hawk, the young Jim Bridger, and the mercenary John Fitzgerald. However, Fitzgerald murders Hawk in front of Glass, who watches helplessly after being paralyzed following the bear attack. Fitzgerald then abandons Glass.
The Revenant also has great significance for DiCaprio as it is the only movie for which he won the Oscar for the Best Actor category at the 88th Academy Awards in 2016.
In addition to DiCaprio and Hardy, the movie also features Domhnall Gleeson as Andrew Henry, Will Poulter as Jim Bridger, and Forrest Goodluck as Hawk, among others.
