On Wednesday, a California judge suspended criminal charges against an armed man arrested near Donald Trump’s golf club. Based on statements he made earlier, concerns emerged about his mental fitness to stand trial. Therefore, he is now undergoing a psychiatric evaluation.

An armed man, identified as 38-year-old former US Marine Jeanine John Taele, was found wearing an earpiece and taking pictures of Donald Trump‘s golf course ahead of the arrest. It was the same location where the president was about to visit for the Republican National Committee dinner. The US attorney’s office in Los Angeles stated that during the search of his pickup van, which was at the golf course’s parking lot, it had a loaded 9 mm pistol, binoculars, and a “security protection agent” badge.
What particularly concerned the investigators were the 200-page writings following the arrest. It included schedules of First Lady Melania Trump and members of Trump’s Secret Service and details about surviving “off the grid.” It is to be noted that the writings didn’t involve any specific political ideology or motive. At the time of writing, the case had been sent to mental health court in Hollywood by Los Angeles County Judge John Lonergan Jr.
Taele hasn’t secured bail, and a decision over his case will be taken only after the September 9 hearing at the mental health court. His attorney, A.J. Bayn, defended his client, saying, “He’s a veteran, he served our country, and I don’t know enough right now, but he has a family that loves him, that has huge support for him.” He stated that “people assume too much” about what his motives could be during the day of his arrest (via Associated Press News).
The judge then also reflected upon Taele’s 2025 arrest, where he accused an AT&T employee of spying on him with the help of Meta glasses. He then stole the glasses and was found talking to himself in the parking lot. At the time, he was charged with second-degree robbery.
