Anthony Mackie will reportedly continue playing Captain America after Avengers: Secret Wars. MCU Film News shared the report on X, citing scooper @JamesMackwl. Mackie will allegedly lead his own Avengers team beyond the Multiverse Saga.

The report arrives amid ongoing concerns about Sam Wilson’s role in Avengers: Doomsday. Thor appears positioned as the leader of the heroes in the film’s marketing so far. Sam has only appeared in group shots and has not spoken in any trailer footage.

Chris Evans’ return as Steve Rogers also risks overshadowing Sam in Doomsday. The Russo Brothers have discussed Steve’s importance to the film’s story publicly. Evans received significantly more trailer attention than Mackie has so far.

Sam’s new Avengers team has also received little focus in the trailers. The footage suggests the team will split up across different universes during the film. Captain America, Falcon, Shang-Chi, and Ant-Man appear to be members, but no shot features them together.

However, there are reasons for optimism about Sam’s future in the MCU. Marvel has a well-established history of holding back major details in its marketing. The Russos introduced Sam Wilson to the MCU and share an extensive history with the character.

Captain America: Brave New World ended with Sam actively building a new Avengers roster. The reported post-Secret Wars plans suggest Marvel wants to keep investing in Mackie’s Captain America. Sam’s journey from Falcon to solo hero to team leader could extend beyond the current saga. 

Avengers: Doomsday arrives in theaters on December 18, 2026, with a reported 165-minute runtime. Avengers: Secret Wars will follow and likely set up the MCU’s next era. Mackie’s continued involvement would mark over a decade of playing Sam Wilson since his 2014 debut.
