Mamoru Oshii‘s celebrated anime classic Ghost in the Shell is coming back to theaters in 4K. The cyberpunk masterpiece has announced its rerelease date with a brand new poster.
Lionsgate will bring Ghost in the Shell across 800+ theaters in North America on September 18, 2026, for its 30th anniversary. It will also play in stunning 4K in select theaters.
Ghost in the Shell’s official synopsis reads, “2029: A female cybernetic government agent, Major Motoko Kusanagi, and the Internal Bureau of Investigations are hot on the trail of ‘The Puppet Master,’ a mysterious and threatening computer virus capable of infiltrating human hosts. Together with her fellow agents from Section 9, Kusanagi embarks on a high-tech race against time to capture the omnipresent entity. Director Mamoru Oshii’s award-winning cyber-tech thriller, based on the comic book by Masamune Shirow, has established itself as one of the leading Japanese animation films of all time.”

What is in the Ghost in the Shell’s trailer
Ghost in the Shell trailer shows the main character of Major Motoko Kusanagi, who was once human but gets transformed into a cyborg.
In a race against time, Kusanagi tries to chase down ‘The Puppet Master’, a dangerous virus with a potential to threaten human hosts. A voiceover in the trailer says, “Humanity has underestimated the consequences of computerization.”
“Some films define the future”, reads the description for the film in the trailer. “This one defined it.”

Written by Kazunori Itô and Shirow Masamune, the award-winning film’s voice cast includes Atsuko Tanaka, Akio Ōtsuka, Kōichi Yamadera, and Tamio Ōki.
Ever since its original release in 1995, the sci-fi movie has earned cult status of being one of the greatest Japanese animated films of all time. It received stellar reviews and reactions when it first came out in theaters.
Currently, Ghost in the Shell holds an excellent Tomatometer score of 95% and an amazing Popcornmeter score of 89% on Rotten Tomatoes.
