Rupert Grint, best known for playing Ron Weasley in all eight Harry Potter films, is heading back to the wizarding world. Years after saying goodbye to Ron on screen, Grint is now set to play the character on Broadway. And this time, Ron is all grown up.
Rupert Grint will officially reprise his role as Ron Weasley in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child on Broadway
Grint will return as Ron Weasley in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, according to The New York Times. This will be the stage sequel to the Harry Potter books and films. The Broadway production has been running since 2018.
The actor will begin performances on February 2 and has signed on for a 17-week run through May 30. His limited engagement will give audiences a chance to see him revisit the character at a very different point in Ron’s life.
Grint was only 11 when he first took on the role of Ron. He played one of Harry Potter’s two closest friends throughout the film series. Now the 38-year-old will play Ron as a husband and father.
In a statement, Grint said, “I can’t wait to meet him again in this stage of life.” He also mentioned, “There is something so full-circle and so special about stepping back into Ron’s shoes now when we are both fathers; it is somehow both very familiar and completely new.”
After the Harry Potter films, he has continued building his career in other areas in film and television since the franchise ended. He has also appeared on Broadway before. In 2014, he joined the cast of the successful revival of Terrence McNally’s It’s Only a Play.
Grint’s Broadway return will also come shortly after another original Harry Potter star leaves Cursed Child. Tom Felton, who played Draco Malfoy in the films, is set to finish his 14-month Broadway run in the show.
Like Grint, Felton returned to his famous role as an adult. In Cursed Child, Draco has changed for the better, and the story takes place 19 years after the events of the final Harry Potter novel.
Now, with Grint preparing to step back into Ron’s shoes, fans will get another chance to see one of the original trio return to the magical world.
