The Simpsons goes full Black Mirror with its latest Disney+ episode that streams today, August 26. Titled The Simpsons: Yellow Mirror, it brings a darker sci-fi horror comedy approach to Springfield. The special uses two unsettling stories to explore technology, artificial intelligence, and reality.
The trailer starts with Bart Simpson warning that “anything can happen in the Yellow Mirror.” It then moves into two strange stories with a darker tone than usual.
The first story follows Homer after a defective lamp makes him question his own reality. A flashback shows him during high school, telling Barney Gumble that his life never existed. Barney responds by pointing out that it is “fish stick Friday.”
The second story centers on Maggie and a dangerous AI projection named Hailey. The AI takes control of an interactive tablet before befriending and brainwashing the baby Simpson. Hailey then turns its attention toward Springfield and its residents. AI is seen issuing threats, controlling robotic guard dogs, and holding the entire Earth in its hands.
The Simpsons takes a dark-tech turn in its final Disney+ exclusive episode
The new special leans into the technology-focused horror associated with Black Mirror. Rather than simply copying the Netflix anthology, The Simpsons uses its own characters to explore familiar fears about artificial intelligence and reality.
The episode is the third Disney+ exclusive Simpsons special released this summer. It follows Extreme Makeover: Homer Edition and Simpsley, which arrived earlier this year. It also marks the final installment in the trio of summer exclusives announced for The Simpsons.
The timing also gives fans another Simpsons story before the show’s return to its regular television schedule. Season 38 is set to premiere on Fox on September 27, continuing the long-running animated series.
Created by Matt Groening, The Simpsons has remained a major part of television animation for decades. The series follows the Simpson family and their neighbors in Springfield, combining family comedy with frequent pop-culture parodies.
