Prince Harry has left his role on the board of directors at African Parks. The news comes a year after its rangers were found to have committed human rights abuses in some incidents. Harry’s exit from the position also comes amid reports of his return to the UK for an extended period.
Prince Harry steps down from African Parks charity role
A spokesperson for Prince Harry announced that he is no longer a part of the board of African Parks. The Duke of Sussex first collaborated with them in 2016. He served as the president of the organization before being advanced to the board of directors role in 2023.
“The Duke is proud of his 10 years with African Parks and fully supports the ongoing strengthening of its Board. His commitment to conservation in Africa continues, and he remains a supporter of African Parks’ mission,” the spokesperson said (via PEOPLE).
Reports from last year suggest that Harry was asked to step down after an investigation opened about the rangers abusing the Baka people in the Republic of the Congo. In May 2025, the organization stated that the investigation had been completed. It was reportedly found that human abuses had occurred in some incidents.
Addressing the situation, African Parks wrote in a statement, “We are committed to addressing the shortcomings that have been identified. Further, where sufficient evidence is available, we will take action against staff members implicated in incidents not yet known about, or that had not been adequately dealt with.”
The charity’s statement further read, “The Board is confident that the institutional improvements implemented over the past five years, along with those planned for the coming months – incorporating valuable recommendations from Omnia – will mitigate risks in the future.”
Harry’s exit from such a major position comes as he is all set to relocate to the UK with Meghan Markle and their kids, Archie and Lilibet. Additionally, they will be residing in a non-royal base and outside of London in private accommodation.
