Some franchise ideas never make it past the drawing board, but this one had already gotten surprisingly far. Warner Bros. reportedly developed a Harry-Potter spin-off series centered on four young wizards, aka The Marauders, whose school years could have opened a fresh corner of the wizarding world before the studio changed course.

The abandoned project would have followed James Potter, Sirius Black, Remus Lupin, and Peter Pettigrew during the 1970s. The four troublemakers eventually joined Albus Dumbledore’s Order of the Phoenix and fought Voldemort during the First Wizarding War. They also created the Marauder’s Map, which later became a favorite tool of Fred and George Weasley.
This was not merely an early pitch. Knight Edge Media reports that Warner Bros. had assembled a writers’ room, prepared a series bible, and completed three scripts for the first season. Casting and other prep work were reportedly next on the agenda before David Zaslav ultimately axed the project. For some members of the creative team, the news came as a shock when the studio unveiled its reboot plans in 2023.
The timing makes the decision especially interesting. The original saga delivered eight films, while the later Fantastic Beasts branch added three more theatrical releases. Together, the Harry Potter movies became a massive box-office machine, with the core eight-film run generating more than $7.7 billion worldwide. The three Fantastic Beasts movies pushed the Wizarding World’s theatrical footprint even further.
A Marauders story could have offered something the eventual reboot cannot quite replicate: a familiar world with a mostly unexplored era and characters fans already know from the original books. Instead, HBO is moving forward with a new television adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s seven-book saga, giving the studio another chance to retell Harry’s journey from the beginning.
The Marauders’ story may not be completely off the table. Knight Edge Media has suggested that HBO’s reboot could explore their younger years through flashback sequences, although nothing has been confirmed. Considering how much James, Sirius, Remus, and Peter’s past shapes Harry’s world, the franchise already has a built-in excuse to dust off that chapter someday.
