Austin Abrams is facing a fight for survival in the newly dropped trailer for his upcoming survival thriller alongside Josh Brolin. 20th Century Studios released the trailer for Whalefall on August 19, 2026.
Austin Abrams and Josh Brolin are playing the roles of Jay Gardiner and Mitt Gardiner in the adventure film directed by Brian Duffield. The story follows the journey of a scuba diver who embarks on a mission to rescue his father’s remains. During the journey, he is swallowed by a whale and has only an hour to save his life before the oxygen is depleted.
The story delves into the complex relationship between Jay Gardiner and his father. The synopsis of the film reads, “Following the death of his father (Josh Brolin), Jay Gardiner (Austin Abrams) goes diving off the central Coast of California in search of his remains, but is swallowed by a massive sperm whale. While trapped inside its belly with only one hour of oxygen left, Jay comes to realize that the hard-earned lessons his father imparted may be the key to his escape.”

The film is based on the 2023 New York Times bestselling novel by Daniel Kraus. Brian Duffield, alongside being the director, has also produced the film with Jeb Brody, Brian Grazer, and Allam Mandelbaum.
What’s happening in the Whalefall trailer?
The 2-minute 13-second trailer begins with Austin Abrams, aka Jay Gardiner, looking up at a picture of his father, Mitt Gardiner, played by Brolin, while another character is narrating how his life was saved by Mitt. He refers to Mitt as an angel and asks Jay whether he knows him, to which Jay replies, “No”.
The trailer then jumps to how Jay is gearing up to embark on a journey in the ocean. The mission soon takes a life-threatening turn as he gets swallowed by a huge whale. The trailer hints that the film will narrate how he fights to save his life in one hour.
The cast of the film features Elisabeth Shue, Jane Levy, Emily Rudd, John Ortiz, Mark Melero Jr., Grayson Paul Solomine, Sam Skolnik, Nicholas Gould, Laurel Land Bowen, and Sam Franich alongside Brolin and Abrams.
Whalefall is scheduled to hit the screens on October 16, 2026.
