Matt Damon‘s upcoming sci-fi movie from the Daniels is reportedly drawing inspiration from a beloved 1990s franchise. The project, currently rumored to have the working title Thasnagar, has kept its story under wraps, although new reports have offered some details about the project.
According to Jeff Sneider, the mystery project starring Damon and Sandra Oh is influenced by Power Rangers despite reportedly having no official ties to the franchise. The report comes days after Disney+ canceled its live-action Power Rangers series
Little is currently known about the movie. According to the report, the film follows a group of young characters wearing color-coded outfits. They join forces to battle kaiju, while Damon plays a superhero-like figure who helps guide them. Sandra Oh plays his AI sidekick.
Sneider clarified no official ties to the franchise by adding, “The wholly original movie has no official connection to Power Rangers, but I’m told it’s a pretty clear influence and that comparisons will definitely be made.”
What else do we know about Matt Damon and Daniels’ new movie?
The story reportedly moves between two timelines, with one set in the 1980s and the other in the present day. In the old timeline, Damon and Oh play the parents of one of the teenagers.
Damon was not the original choice for his role in the movie. Ryan Gosling was previously attached to the role before departing the project, while other reports have claimed that Brad Pitt and Keanu Reeves also passed on it. According to reports, the role may not have offered enough screen time, given its focus on five young leads.
The five young leads are played by Sean Kaufman, Silvia Dionicio, Jackson Kelly, Kerrice Brooks, and Thalia Dudek. Charles Melton, Michael Gandolfini, and PinkPantheress are also part of the ensemble cast.
Universal Pictures is scheduled to release the movie in theaters on Nov. 19, 2027. The film is also said to involve global warming, time travel, and a possible superhero angle. Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert are producing the movie alongside Jonathan Wang. The project is supposedly budgeted at around $150 million.
