Donald Trump recently suggested that permanent daylight saving time could help lower murder rates in the country. This follows the President’s ongoing efforts to pass the Sunshine Protection Act. The act, as described, states that the twice-yearly clock changes that happen in the United States would end.
Donald Trump’s Sunshine Protection Act argument includes lower robbery and murder rates
Donald Trump recently reposted an earlier post on his Truth Social. He argued that daylight saving time should become a permanent phenomenon, as it will lower crimes like murder.
The President has been pressing the Senate to pass the Sunshine Protection Act permanently after the House passed it by 308-117. In the post, Trump stated, “Leading Medical, Crime, and Economic Studies have shown that ceasing the biannual time change, giving us one extra hour of natural sunlight in the evenings, will help Decrease Robbery and Murder Rates.” He further boasted that, apart from his administration, no other government has been able to pass the act in the House.
Trump stated that changing the clocks twice a year has frustrated the people and described it as “foolish, inconvenient and, in some cases, very costly. For Cities and States with Watchtowers, and hard to reach places, it costs Millions of Dollars.”
For daylight saving time, citizens set their clocks forward by one hour to extend daylight into the evening. Trump also suggested that making daylight saving time permanent would be medically beneficial to citizens. He claimed that the act will “lower Risk for Cardiac Issues, Stroke, and Seasonal Depression.” He also conveyed that the act would come as a boost for the economy and make society safer because “everyone will be enjoying an EXTRA HOUR OF DAYLIGHT.”
The bill has now reached the Senate for consideration after its stint in the House. If passed by the Senate, it will go to the President for signature to become law.
