Popular CBS Sports analyst Tony Romo gets a crucial update following his drunk driving arrest last month. Apart from being the network’s No.1 analyst, Romo is also a former Dallas Cowboys quarterback.
It’s been revealed that CBS Sports’ team hasn’t reached a final decision on Tony Romo yet. According to the network president David Berson, “It’s an evolving situation, and therefore we’re still investigating. There is no timetable or final decision at this time.”
Berson mentioned that it’s a personal and legal matter for the 46-year-old, and it’s too soon to say anything, reports Deadline.
Tony Romo’s absence opens the door for JJ Watt at CBS
The new NFL season kicks off in just a month, and a proper decision is yet to come on Tony Romo’s future at CBS Sports. But it seems the current situation has opened the door to an opportunity for the network’s No. 2 analyst, J.J. Watt.
Replacing Romo, Watt was announced as the leader of CBS Sports’ team, which also includes Jim Nantz and Tracy Wolfson. “Tony Romo is on leave from his role at CBS Sports until further notice,” read a previous statement from the network.
For the unversed, Romo was stopped by the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office on July 23, 2026, and then arrested on suspicion of driving a vehicle while drunk. An open bottle of alcoholic drink was found on the passenger side of the vehicle.
Notably, Romo’s future at CBS Sports looks uncertain for other reasons as well. Many believe that his performance as an analyst has come down in recent years. He originally gained a lot of popularity in his first season on the air. He even earned the nickname ‘Romo-stradamus’ for his on-air predictions of lots of on-field action.
Following the legal matter, the network has indicated that it won’t let Romo’s situation affect its reputation. “We have to consider the impact on our image and our brand,” said Berson. “That’s very important to us. Whether the games, marketing, PR, social, the focus should be, and needs to be, on our presentation and this great product, and not on any other factors.”
