Tiffany Haddish‘s years-long legal battle finally reached its conclusion in a Georgia courtroom. The comedian and actress resolved her 2022 DUI case with a plea deal that ended the chapter on her terms.
Tiffany Haddish’s DUI case ends with guilty plea and no more jail
Tiffany Haddish pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor alcohol-related driving charge on Tuesday in Fayette County, Georgia, the Associated Press reported. The plea came on the day her long-delayed trial was set to begin. The Girls Trip star avoided additional jail time following the plea.
The charge stemmed from her January 14, 2022, arrest in Peachtree City, about 30 miles south of Atlanta. A 911 caller reported seeing a driver asleep at the wheel of a white Ford Explorer at a traffic light. Other drivers had been blowing their horns at the vehicle at the intersection.
A responding officer stopped Haddish as she pulled into a nearby neighborhood. During field sobriety tests, the officer detected “the odor of marijuana” from her jacket. The officer also smelled alcohol on her breath (via Entertainment Weekly).
The court placed Haddish on 12 months of probation after she entered her plea by video. She must avoid drugs and alcohol and complete a substance abuse evaluation during that period. Her Georgia driver’s license has also been suspended. The court credited her for the brief time she spent in jail after her arrest. All other misdemeanor charges, including a drug-related DUI, were dismissed.
Her lawyers had asked a judge in May to dismiss the case over the four-year delay. They argued the wait caused personal and professional difficulties and violated her speedy trial rights. Judge Jason Thompson rejected those arguments. He noted Haddish and her attorneys had requested some delays themselves. One delay allowed her to attend a fashion show in Morocco.
Haddish faced a separate DUI arrest in Beverly Hills in November 2023. Police said she appeared slumped over the wheel of her vehicle. She pleaded no contest to a vehicle code violation in February 2024. Two misdemeanor DUI charges were dropped in that case.
