How David Lynch Made Dylan Sprouse Quit Smoking

Dylan Sprouse has revealed that one of the rare celebrity encounters that left him genuinely starstruck also changed his relationship with cigarettes. The actor recently looked back on an unexpected interaction with David Lynch, explaining why the brief encounter stayed with him long after the two went their separate ways.

Dylan Sprouse recalls spotting David Lynch at Chateau Marmont before a cigarette break changed his perspective

During an Aug. 4 appearance on the Not Skinny But Not Fat podcast, Sprouse recalled having dinner at Chateau Marmont in Los Angeles with Barbara Palvin and friends when he heard Lynch speaking at a nearby table.

Sprouse, a longtime Lynch fan, said he immediately recognized the filmmaker’s voice. Palvin encouraged him to introduce himself, but Sprouse resisted because he did not want to interrupt Lynch while he was eating.

Instead, he stepped outside for a cigarette. A short time later, Lynch entered the smoking area and asked Sprouse for a cigarette and a light. Sprouse handed him both.

The Chateau Marmont encounter soon took an unexpected turn when Laura Dern joined Lynch. Sprouse recalled watching Lynch pull a fresh pack of cigarettes and a lighter from his own pocket for Dern, leaving him to wonder whether the director had actually needed to borrow anything from him.

Before leaving, Lynch thanked Sprouse and told him he was “very polite.” Sprouse came away believing Lynch had noticed how starstruck he was and deliberately created a memorable interaction without making him approach the filmmaker himself.

That moment became the reason Dylan Sprouse quit smoking cigarettes. “I’ll never have a better cigarette than that in my entire life,” he said. Sprouse added that Lynch had given him a story worth more than a photograph or autograph.

Sprouse did clarify one point on the Not Skinny But Not Fat podcast. Giving up cigarettes did not mean he immediately stopped using nicotine products. He joked that he started using Geek Bars afterward.

Barbara Palvin had a front-row seat to the unusual interaction years before she and Sprouse entered their current chapter together. The couple married in July 2023 and are expecting their first child, a daughter.

Lynch died in January 2025 at age 78. Sprouse said the encounter remains one of the most meaningful celebrity interactions he has experienced.
