Netflix Acquires 2 Major Oscars 2027 Contenders, Details & More Revealed

Netflix has acquired two highly acclaimed and potential 2027 Oscar contenders. Both films have earned acclaim and awards at various film festivals over the past year.

The documentary shorts an open field and One Last Order have been acquired by Netflix for distribution.

Directed by Teboho Edkins, an open field has previously won the IDFA Award for Best Short Documentary at the 2025 International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam.

As for One Last Order, directed by Lauren DeFilippo and Sam Soko, it won the Best Documentary and Audience Award at the 2026 Aspen Shortsfest. It also won the Short Film Audience Award at the Miami Film Festival and the Best Documentary Short Audience Award at the Nantucket Film Festival.

What else do we know about Netflix’s two 2027 Oscar contenders?

an open field follows director Teboho Edkins’ personal tragedy. The official logline for the documentary short reads, “Through collective grief and compassion, an open field follows director Teboho Edkins’ return to the Ethiopian field where his younger brother and 156 others were killed in a Boeing 737 MAX plane crash in 2019.”

Sharing his thoughts on the documentary short, the filmmaker said, “This is a delicate and personal work, and about something fundamental to being human. I hope that the film can find its way to as many people as possible, and that something in it might resonate with them.”

After Netflix acquired his documentary short, Edkins added, “I’m grateful for their support as it makes its way out into the world.” The movie has Don Edkins and Carine Chichkowsky as the producers.

Meanwhile, One Last Order, it tells the story of Sighle Williams, a beloved worker at Mac’s Drive-Thru. She worked there for nearly four decades.

The official logline for One Last Order reads, “After 37 years of turning drive-thru orders into personal connections, Sighle Williams expects a quiet farewell from a Florida burger joint—but her town has other plans.”

Expressing their feelings on this inspiring story, directors Lauren DeFilippo and Sam Soko said, “Sighle remembered every order and every smile. Now we get to celebrate her, and all the other Sighles out there who make an ordinary day feel a little brighter.”

Sharing their happiness on Netflix acquiring their work, the duo added, “This film is a love letter to everyday kindness and the people who make ordinary places extraordinary. We’re thrilled Netflix is sharing it with you, too.”

One Last Order is produced by DeFilippo, Sam Soko, and Amanda Pollak. Ruth Ann Harnisch, Sam Bisbee, Ron DeFilippo, Bramwel Iro, and Stephen Ives have served as the executive producers.
