Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to hit theaters on December 18, 2026. Alongside the return of Chris Evans as Steve Rogers, Marvel Studios officially announced the return of Hayley Atwell to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Now, a rumor highlights a compelling fan theory regarding Hayley Atwell’s Peggy Carter portrayal.
Although Atwell’s return was confirmed during Marvel’s Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2026, official plot specifics remain heavily under wraps. Following the announcement, fans immediately speculated about an emotional reunion between Agent Carter and Steve Rogers. However, a recent theory shared on social media hints at a dark, unexpected twist.
“Only one of the Latverian witches will show her face, guys, and she’s disguised as Peggy Carter,” read the theory from James Mack’s X post.
During the SDCC, a Latverian witch made an appearance in the Marvel booth who changed the color of her costume every day. Latverian witches might be characters who would appear in Avengers: Doomsday as followers and lieutenants of Doctor Doom. The new theory suggests that a Latverian witch will disguise herself as Peggy Carter in Avengers: Doomsday.
The latest rumor adds a mysterious new layer to Peggy Carter’s return
Ever since Atwell was announced for Avengers: Doomsday, various fan theories have emerged surrounding her character arc. In 2022’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Atwell portrayed a Captain Carter variant. While many expected her to reprise the super-soldier variant, Atwell reflected on her character at the San Diego Comic-Con and hinted that it might not be what fans might be expecting.
“First of all, it’s a relief,” Atwell told Collider regarding the secrecy around her casting. “I had so many people speculating, rumors circulating, and then as we’re getting closer to this day, people kind of going, ‘Oh, you’re in it; just tell me.’ It feels nice not to have to kind of be noncommittal or lie about it… We’re withholding this information not to be mean but also to create that element of surprise.”
Atwell added that while she is “back to square one,” the movie will definitely surprise fans. “All I will say is that it is sort of an existential crisis of a movie, where the whole world is turned on its head, and we don’t even know who we are anymore,” she explained.
