Caitríona Balfe Leads New Horror TV Show From Harry Potter Director Alfonso Cuarón

Caitríona Balfe has bagged a new horror show at Apple TV with Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban’s director, Alfonso Cuarón.

According to the latest update from Variety, the horror thriller Ascension has been given the go-ahead by Apple TV. This comes as a major boost for Cuarón, as the director had been busy with the series for several years. The news about the series initially came into the public light way back in 2017. Initially, the show was supposed to cast Casey Affleck as the lead. However, it was later decided that the series would be led by Outlander star Caitríona Balfe.

The show’s logline reads, per Variety, “a relentless documentary filmmaker and recently divorced mother, brilliant at uncovering others’ truths but struggling to resolve her own. When Rose begins a project on a mysterious 20th-century cult known as the Church of Ascension, she finds unexpected refuge in its teachings – until she discovers something far more insidious beneath.” Ascension will be adapted from Adam Nevill’s novel, Last Days.

What else has Alfonso Cuarón worked on besides the third Harry Potter movie?

Cuarón is best known for his work in the third Harry Potter movie, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. However, apart from that, the 64-year-old filmmaker also has an impressive track record. The Mexican director has so far received 11 Academy Awards nominations. Cuarón has also bagged four Oscars. First up in 2014, the director was presented with the best editing and best director awards for Gravity. Again in 2019, he won the best cinematography and best director awards for Roma.

Apart from all these, the famed director also received an Academy Award nomination for Y tu mamá también alongside his brother, Carlos Cuarón. Interestingly, Ascension will not be the first time the 64-year-old has partnered with Apple TV. Starring Sacha Baron Cohen, Cate Blanchett, and others, Cuarón created, wrote, and directed the 2024 miniseries, Disclaimer.
