Joel Coen’s New Movie Gets Exciting Release Date Update Despite Having No Distributor

Oscar-winning filmmaker Joel Coen‘s new movie has received a promising and crucial update despite having no distributor. The project appears to be gaining much-needed momentum after recent screenings.

The upcoming film is a gothic mystery titled Jack of Spades, set in 1880s Scotland. It marks Coen’s second work as a solo director after The Tragedy of Macbeth.

So far, the movie has been lacking a distributing studio since wrapping its production late last year. But now it seems the situation will change sooner rather than later.

Why Joel Coen’s latest film appears closer to securing a theatrical release

According to a new update from Variety, Joel Coen’s Jack of Spades is expected to find a distributor and also a release date. This is because the recent test screening for the gothic mystery movie was well received.

It’s been revealed that Jack of Spades’ original version was longer, clocking at 150 minutes, but it showed potential. Later, a shorter version was screened and appears to have hit the sweet spot. Hence, an acquisition announcement is expected sooner rather than later.

Speaking more of the movie, its cast features Josh O’Connor (Disclosure Day, The History of Sound), Frances McDormand (Nomadland, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri), Lesley Manville (Magpie Murders, Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris), and Damian Lewis (Homeland, Billions, Pressure), among others.

Carter Burwell has composed the score for Jack of Spades. Bruno Delbonnel is the cinematographer who has previously worked with Coen on Inside Llewyn Davis. The 2013 comedy drama starred Oscar Isaac, Carey Mulligan, John Goodman, Justin Timberlake, and Adam Driver in major roles alongside Garret Hedlund and Stark Sands.

Jack of Spades has yet to receive an official release date. Previously, it was set to come out in 2026, but it was delayed. Now, it is expected to hit theaters sometime in 2027.
