After nearly four decades in the same recording booth, one cast member finally said out loud what she expects the network to do. Her timeline gives the show barely two more years, and viewers online had a blunt reaction.

Nancy Cartwright sat down with Michael Rosenbaum for a new video interview and put a rough expiration date on the series that made her famous. The Bart Simpson voice artist said on Inside of You With Michael Rosenbaum she assumes The Simpsons will end by season 40.
Rosenbaum then pressed her on the reasoning behind the The Simpsons ending she predicted. Cartwright kept her answer brief. “That’s my opinion,” she said.
The series currently sits in its 38th season, which leaves just two more before her projected finish line.
One commenter doubted the show would stop at all. “I have a nasty gut feeling even if a major cast member does die even if it’s after season 40 that they’ll just replace them with AI,” the person wrote, adding, “I hope I’m wrong and that they’ll just let the show die like it should have done years ago.”
Another reaction landed differently. “I was today years old when I realized this show was still going on,” someone else said.
Cartwright had already hinted at a wrap-up earlier this year. While discussing the show’s 800-episode milestone and its renewal through The Simpsons Season 40 with the Associated Press, she reflected on how deeply the job shaped her routine.
“You know, it’s become such a part of my lifestyle,” she told AP. “I’m used to doing it all the time, and I don’t know…”
She continued, “I’m not looking forward to the day when we’re done, and there then is no schedule for me to go in to show up at Fox or wherever we’re doing the table read or the record.”
Even so, she left the door open. “Fortunately, it’s in the future quite a bit, but tick-tock,” Cartwright added. “And who knows what will happen after [season] 40, if we’re all still around and ticking. Maybe we’ll have another negotiation, who knows.”
Her run stretches back more than 38 years. Cartwright auditioned on March 13, 1987, for the animated shorts on The Tracey Ullman Show, then carried Bart into the prime-time series when it debuted in 1989. She has voiced him ever since.
