After the massive success of its two Super Mario films, Nintendo is looking to expand its presence in the movie business with more feature-length projects in the near future. Besides the repeated box office successes, Nintendo has said that there is another reason to produce more films based on its most iconic characters.
Nintendo teases more movie plans after Super Mario’s double billion success
In its latest financial assessment, Nintendo hinted that more projects based around some of its most iconic characters will be arriving soon. The company also clarified that it beleives such projects will help Nintendo reach a wider audience.
“We believe that our initiatives in movies and videos can transcend the boundaries of the dedicated video game platform business and provide opportunities for people all over the world to become aware of Nintendo characters,” the report reads. It also notes that, “In particular, it serves as an opportunity for consumers in regions where dedicated video game platforms are not yet widely adopted to experience Nintendo content for the first time.”
Notably, The Super Mario Bros. Movie broke several box office records at the time of its release. The film ended its theatrical run with a worldwide collection of $1.36 billion, as per Box Office Mojo, making it the highest-grossing video game adaptation of all time. Its direct sequel, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, was also a success at the global box office, with a worldwide collection of $1.01 billion.
“Going forward, we will take a variety of approaches to continually create contact points with Nintendo characters all over the world,” the report added, confirming that fans can expect even more Nintendo-themed films to go into production in the future. Currently, the company has a live-action Legend of Zelda movie in production, which is on track to hit theaters on April 30, 2027.
