A royal author has reportedly claimed that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s headline-making exit from the royal family in 2020 has caused “serious damage” to the monarchy. The author has stated that this has affected especially the younger generation of Brits. For those unversed, the Sussexes stepped down as senior working royals and moved to pursue a different life in Montecito, California.

Royal author Catherine Mayer dished to Fox News that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s exit from the royal family has had serious repercussions on the monarchy. Mayer noted: “I believe that the rupture in the family that saw Meghan and Harry go to the United States has done very serious damage to the monarchy. But to say that is not to say that I blame them for what happened.”
Furthermore, Mayer explained that if one takes a serious look at the latest polling on the popularity of the monarchy, one would understand the ground reality. She explained that the Sussexes were “undoubtedly” able to connect with the younger generation of Brits, which the other members of the family failed to.
Mayer shared that Prince William and Kate Middleton can achieve this only if they tone down their conservative approach. While the Waleses are bringing their three children, George, Charlotte, and Louis, to the forefront, it is going to be a while before they join the ranks of working royals. Hence, it is important that William and Kate take this mantle forward for the time being.
Mayer elucidated: “Their children are really young. And there’s nobody in between George and his parents, William and Kate, to capture the imagination of younger audiences. Harry and Meghan are basically the same age, but they had this appeal, a much broader appeal, and that’s been lost now.”
However, Mayer also agreed that the controversy over ex-Prince Andrew’s ties to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein has contributed to the royal family’s declining popularity in recent UK polling.
