“Days of Our Lives” actress Deidre Hall reflected on the filming of the famous possession scene on set. Hall recently celebrated 50 years on the soap opera.
Deidre recalls filming Marlena’s infamous devil possession
People reports that the possession scene was pitched to Hall after weird things started happening around them. Hall remembers getting called upstairs and facing a tough crowd of Tom Lagan, the EP, and Jim Riley, the head writer.
Reportedly, they told her that she was the one who was “causing all the chaos”. When Hall questioned the strange accusation, she was told it was “Because you’re possessed by the devil.”
“It’s so ridiculous,” Hall says with a laugh. “It was a lot.”
However, after readying herself for the iconic scene, Hall found the entire experience “pretty thrilling.” Reportedly, her character Marlena Evans was to be possessed by the devil and would be levitating on screen.
“I actually did levitate,” Hall said, adding, “It was a little scary because I actually do lift out of the bed,” Hall said, referring to a “device” that was purpose-made for the scene. Hall jokes that her epitaph would read, ‘Deidre Hall: Possession.’”
Oscar-nominated actor Ryan Gosling has praised Hall’s dedication to the scene, saying that it inspired his own acting. “Let’s just say, it was an incredible acting class,” Gosling said. “What’s amazing is I remember that, thinking, ‘God, Deidre Hall is a great actress because she’s having to act possessed right now. That just seems like a lot to ask of her.” He also claimed that soap operas “do not get the love they deserve.”
After the comment made headlines, Hall gave him an open invitation to visit the set of the soap. Though things have not materialized yet, Hall confirmed that talks are going on.
