Former child star Danielle Fishel opened up about being labeled “crazy” after speaking up about her boundaries on Girl Meets World. The actress reflected on the contrast between her time on Boy Meets World as a child actor and Girl Meets World as an adult. The 45-year-old said she experienced a different level of treatment on the spinoff.
Danielle Fishel says asserting personal boundaries led to backlash on the set
On the July 28 episode of the I Choose Me with Jennie Garth podcast, the actress opened up about navigating difficult moments while working on set. She said, according to OK! Magazine, “It was more like, when something happened I felt uncomfortable with, I would then make time to go in and talk to the people I felt uncomfortable with. I would say, ‘Can I talk to you about something? This makes me feel uncomfortable.’”
Fishel said people reacted by calling her “crazy.” She said there was backlash over her setting boundaries for how others spoke to, touched, and interacted with her. However, she said returning to Girl Meets World in 2014 marked a new phase in her life. She became more confident speaking up and addressed issues privately.
Looking back at her time on Boy Meets World, which ran from 1993 to 2000, she explained that she prioritized being easy to work with. She always aimed to be a “consummate professional.” Fishel said producers felt they could ask her to do anything because she would never push back.
Fishel admitted that others’ reactions made her question herself. However, she decided she could not ignore situations that made her uncomfortable. She recalled wondering if setting boundaries made her “difficult.” She said she would rather be viewed as “difficult” than ignore her own boundaries. She added that her requests were reasonable, even if others viewed them differently. Girl Meets World ran from 2014 to 2017 and starred Rowan Blanchard as Riley Matthews. Sabrina Carpenter played her best friend, Maya Hart, according to People.
