Reports from RadarOnline state that the administration has committed $1.4 billion toward international Ebola response efforts. Africa CDC Director-General Dr Jean Kaseya stressed the importance of this funding. He warned that the outbreak could continue without additional humanitarian support. The disease has spread through parts of Central Africa.
Africa’s health authorities have reported more than 1000 infections and hundreds of deaths. The outbreak has affected the Democratic Republic of Congo and the neighbouring country of Uganda. Officials also raised concerns after an affected French doctor returned from the region. Authorities immediately isolated the doctor following the diagnosis.
The outbreak involved the rare Bundibugyo strain of Ebola. As per the reports, the strain has no approved vaccine or effective treatment. Experts estimated that the virus carried a mortality rate between 30% and 50%. Global health officials warned the strain could potentially spread much further.
Dr Peter Piot, a microbiologist, reportedly warned that failing to contain the outbreak could cause a catastrophe. The World Health Organization declared the situation a public health emergency. Officials cited concerns about the outbreak’s speed and scale. The declaration prompted an emergency meeting in Geneva.
The Trump administration reportedly focused on preventing the virus from reaching American communities. Some funding would support an Ebola quarantine facility at a Kenyan military base. The facility would monitor Americans who potentially faced exposure before returning home. Officials also planned additional travel restrictions.
The CDC had previously restricted travel to several affected countries, including the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda, and South Sudan. Authorities aim to limit the possibility of imported infections.
