Netflix’s biggest film of 2026 starring Alan Ritchson is officially moving into its next chapter. A new update has finally revealed the sequel’s official name after months of speculation. The follow-up arrives after the original became the streamer’s most-watched movie of the year, making another installment one of Netflix’s fastest-moving franchise projects.
War Machine 2’s official title revealed
The sequel now has a title: War Machines. The reveal didn’t come through a formal announcement but through a social media teaser featuring a script cover alongside a towering mechanical figurine. Fans’ eyes lingered on the added “S” that turns the singular title into its plural successor.
Development on the sequel was confirmed earlier this year, but updates had remained scarce until now. Production listings indicate the project is moving forward with an estimated budget between $50 million and $100 million.
Patrick Hughes returns to direct and co-write alongside James Beaufort, while Lionsgate, Hidden Pictures, Range Media Partners and Huge Film are producing the Australia-U.S. co-production for Netflix (via What’s on Netflix).
The naming choice immediately drew comparisons to one of Hollywood’s most famous sequels, Aliens, which similarly expanded its scope with a single extra letter. While Netflix has yet to reveal story details, the updated title hints that the next film could broaden the conflict and might feature multiple massive War Machines.
Alan Ritchson previously celebrated the sequel after Netflix gave it the green light, thanking fans for turning the original into a worldwide success. Calling it “a monumental day,” he said the film’s universe began with Patrick Hughes’ vision before praising everyone who took “a huge gamble” on him. Ritchson also described the blockbuster milestone as “just the appetizer,” adding, “We’re just getting started.”
Netflix’s confidence is backed by massive viewing numbers. Released globally on March 6, 2026, the first film amassed 146.9 million views and 266.8 million hours watched during the first half of the year. It finished comfortably ahead of The Rip, Swapped and Apex, while also earning a place among Netflix’s Top 10 most-watched films of all time.
