Donald Trump set out to make one point during his primetime address, but the evidence seemed to make another. The president aimed to pin his 2020 defeat on China. Instead, the files he showed pointed towards Russia. The twist quickly became the talk of Washington.
Intelligence assessments say Vladimir Putin directed efforts intended to benefit Donald Trump during the election
Addressing the nation on Thursday, July 16, Trump accused Beijing of compromising the last presidential race. He claimed China hacked or stole data to deny him a win. As proof, he pointed to newly declassified intelligence records from the CIA and other agencies. The White House posted the documents as he spoke.
However, multiple reviews concluded that the documents did not support his core accusation. Instead of showing a Chinese plot to sink his reelection, the material highlighted an assessment involving Moscow. It indicated that Russia had tried to help him. According to the release, one file details how Vladimir Putin and top Russian officials pushed damaging claims about Joe Biden.
Experts who reviewed the documents said much of the content repeated previously identified risks. A CNN examination determined that nothing in the material had been proven. The President’s Intelligence Advisory Board is helping lead the declassification push. Former GOP Rep. Devin Nunes heads the board.
Republican election attorney Ben Ginsberg told CNN there remained “no evidence of any effect on an election result.” He also noted that the evidence Trump had teased still had not surfaced. Those conclusions align with years of earlier findings.
Congressional reviews from both parties examined the 2016 and 2020 contests. They found no sign that vote tallies had been technically rigged, despite Trump’s claims. Detractors said the speech conveniently gave the Russian leader a pass. Meanwhile, China dismissed Trump’s allegations as “pure fabrications.”
The incident also puts the MAGA movement’s years-long stolen-election message in an awkward position. The GOP’s own declassified files point to Moscow rather than Beijing. For now, the documents meant to support Trump’s case appear to tell a very different story.
TELL US, WERE YOU SURPRISED THAT DONALD TRUMP’S OWN DOCUMENTS POINTED TO RUSSIA? AND WHAT DID YOU MAKE OF HIS PRIMETIME ELECTION SPEECH?
