Mojo, a Maine Coon cat, was the first to alert her owners about a deadly carbon monoxide leak, though they didn’t understand why she was meowing at the start. Pat and William Aboud from Cushing, Maine, heard their cat crying unusually after they finished dinner. They experienced a bit of dizziness and some headaches, but Mojo’s continued insistence that something was wrong finally got through to them.
Maine Coon cat Mojo ‘meowed like they had never heard her meow before’
In the evening on May 4, Pat complained about having a headache after dinner and took a pain reliever when Mojo began meowing “like they had never heard her meow before,” according to a report by Midcoast Villager. The Maine Coon was technically their daughter’s pet, but they offered to take care of it while she was at school in Portland.
Confused by the cat’s yowling, William climbed the stairs to check on the cat but found that he was unusually out of breath. He then went back downstairs and began getting a headache too, as the feline followed him and curled on the floor, strangely continuing to meow.
Later at 11 p.m., Pat came downstairs in response to the cat, while William thought about taking Mojo to the vet. But as he began to walk, he slowed down and wasn’t able to think straight.
That’s when Pat called upon a friend of theirs who was staying in a different part of the house and got William out of the house in a chair with wheels. They quickly called 911, suspecting that something was off.
When emergency personnel arrived on the scene, they discovered that the house had high levels of carbon monoxide due to a broken propane furnace from the basement. While William was taken to a hospital in Rockport, he required a hyperbaric chamber to recover and needed to be flown to a hospital in Boston. The consequences could have been much worse if the cat hadn’t noticed the gas.
Meanwhile, Pat was given oxygen at the scene while their friend didn’t suffer any side effects. Mojo was placed in a car to get fresh air.
After recovering, William installed carbon monoxide detectors in their house and repaired the furnace. Mojo was given extra treats for her rescue.
