Luca Guadagnino‘s controversial Artificial has encountered another setback. After securing a new distributor following Amazon’s exit, the film has encountered another challenge.
What’s the update with Luca Guadagnino’s Artificial movie?
Although Neon has acquired distribution rights for Artificial, the film may receive limited exposure at this year’s film festivals, according to Deadline.
Artificial may screen at some major festivals, but it is not expected to have red-carpet premieres, press junkets, or the traditional promotional opportunities typically associated with major festival premieres.
Ever since it was revealed that Artificial, featuring Andrew Garfield, deals with the subject matter of OpenAI and its co-founder and CEO Sam Altman, the project has been facing scrutiny. A limited festival presence could hurt its awards-season prospects, especially if Guadagnino’s eyeing any nominations at the 2027 Academy Awards. Without ample buzz in the media, it may not have much of a chance to do it.

Originally, Amazon was set to distribute it but then pulled away. Without providing a specific reason, the company said, “We believe that Artificial will be better served if it were released by a different studio and are working closely with the filmmaking team to find the film a new home.”
According to reports, Amazon’s decision was believed to be influenced by its recently announced $50 billion investment in OpenAI. It was also mentioned that Guadagnino’s movie had a darker tone than expected, resulting in Amazon’s exit.
Besides Garfield, the film also features Ike Barinholtz as Elon Musk, one of OpenAI’s co-founders. Other key cast members include Mark Rylance, Yura Borisov, Monica Barbaro, Billie Lourd, Jason Schwartzman, Cooper Koch, and Cooper Hoffman. Simon Rich serves as a producer alongside Luca Guadagnino, David Heyman, Jeffrey Clifford, and Jennifer Fox.
Artificial has yet to receive an official release date window.
